Natural or Reconstituted Stone?

What is reconstituted stone?

Reconstituted stone like Caesarstone (also known as engineered stone) is a man-made composite material using crushed stone (usually 90-95% quartz) that is bound together by an adhesive.

Reconstituted stone is most commonly used for kitchen benchtops & splashbacks due to it’s non-porous qualities, however is also used in many other applications like bathroom vanity tops & shower recess walls, retail counter tops, commercial displays, feature panels, custom built furniture, shelving & wall cladding.

Why use reconstituted stone?

Hard Wearing. The finished surface is very hard, resistant to scratching and cracking and any minor damage can easily be repaired.

Consistent Colour. Reconstituted stone is available in many different colours which remain consistent throughout the slab so that each piece you have will look the same.

Non-porous. Reconstituted stone is non-porous making it stain-resistant, hygienic and safe to use in the kitchen where food can be prepared directly on its surface.

Easy to Clean. Because the surface does not absorb liquids it is stain-resistant and easy to clean.

What is natural stone?

Natural stone slabs are hand-picked chunks of rock taken from the earth that are then cut and polished for use.

Any detail and veining you see is naturally occurring, making each slab unique.

Being a natural product, it is porous and requires a little more care and maintenance to preserve over time.

Why use natural stone?

Long Lasting. The average life span of a natural stone benchtop is 30+ years and they are replaced more often to keep up with current design trends than out of necessity.

Eco-Friendly. The manufacturing process of Natural stone uses less energy and has fewer carbon emissions than that of man-made surfaces. The chunks of rock are sawn into slabs and polished but there is little else done during the process.

All-Natural. No artificial substances are used in the manufacture of natural stone, it’s 100% pure, organic beauty.

Unique. No two pieces of natural stone are ever the same so you can count on your piece being one-of-a-kind.

Natural stone types

There are many different types and colours of natural stone, however the 3 that are used most often on benchtops are Marble, Quartz and Granite.
